Mail Siphon II is a true e-mail agent (to receive and send messages). It has the particularity to be the first on-line agent of its kind for the Macintosh: you can easily read and delete messages from your mailboxes at the server, but also reply to messages. Shareware - $20 and worth every penny!

MailCall is an email notification application. It can perform periodic checks of your accounts and will notify you when new mail has arrived. The newest version has the ability to retrieve the headers for POP3 accounts so that you can see what mail is waiting without opening your email application. Free to use; $12 to register (which allows the program to remain open more than 15 minutes at a time). Not as good as "Mail Siphon", but perfectly adequate if you do not get a lot of email.
